MacEwan University has a long-standing history of providing quality nursing education that is relevant and reflective of current nursing practice in the province and across Canada.  The university’s Faculty of Nursing includes the Department of Nursing Science that offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) degree; the Department of Psychiatric Nursing that offers a Bachelor of Psychiatric Nursing (BPN), and a Psychiatric Nursing Diploma; and the Department of Interprofessional Education and Simulation Learning which houses two centres. The Centre for Professional Nursing Education offers a mosaic of innovative continuing education programs grounded in evidence-based practice and responsive to a dynamic health care environment. The Clinical Simulation Centre is 27,000 square feet of authentic clinical spaces that set the stage for students to practice skills and critical thinking in a realistic learning environment.

The mission of the Department of Psychiatric Nursing is to advance psychiatric nursing education and practice through the development and delivery of high quality, innovative programming; strong professional, academic and clinical partnerships; and attention to professional standards, changing trends and societal needs. The department is guided by a conceptual framework that commits to leadership in psychiatric nursing education, excellence in research and scholarship, and an inclusive and engaged community.

The Psychiatric Nursing Diploma and Post-Diploma Bachelor of Psychiatric Nursing (BPN) programs are learner-centred, innovative and offer a contextually relevant curriculum. The balance between liberal and professional education provides depth and breadth of studies, a global perspective, and an opportunity to develop knowledge, skills and other professional attributes in a variety of areas, including addictions and mental health, acute care and community mental health, child and adolescent psychiatry, and mental health and the law. Through the integration of innovative learning technologies, digital access, and emerging pedagogical-based practices, students are able to apply their psychiatric nursing skills in real world settings in ways that are truly relevant to the clients they serve. Leadership is a foundational concept and skill in nursing education at MacEwan University.
